Στις 12 Ιανουαρίου του 1972 στο Στρασβούργο το Ευρωπαϊκό Υπουργικό Συμβούλιο ανακοίνωσε ότι καθιερώνεται ως ο επίσημος Ευρωπαϊκός Ύμνος η «Ωδή στη Χαρά», απόσπασμα από το 4ο μέρος της 9ης Συμφωνίας του Ludwig van Beethoven, η οποία εκφράζει τα ιδανικά της ειρήνης, της ελευθερίας και της αλληλεγγύης.
Το 1985 όλοι οι ηγέτες της Ε.Ε. υιοθέτησαν το απόσπασμα «Ωδή στη Χαρά» ως επίσημο ύμνο της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης.
